Antoine Lavoisier conducted several experiments related to combustion and observed physical and chemical changes, but found that the overall mass remained constant. Based on this, he formulated the Law of Conservation of Mass, which states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. This law means that the total mass of the reactants in a chemical reaction is equal to the total mass of the products. Lavoisier arrived at this law by carefully studying the outcomes of many combustion reactions.
