Transitional Epithelium -

Structure: 

  • Transitional epithelium is made up of 4 to 6 layers of cells. 
  • The cells of the deepest layer are columnar or cuboidal.
  • The cells of the middle layer are polyhedral while the cells of surface layers are large, globular or umbrella-shaped. 

Location:

  • This epithelium is present in the renal calyces, renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder and part of the urethra.

Function

  • The transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder can be stretched or relaxed without being damaged. It also provides protection.

The cells of the deepest layer are columnar or cuboidal. The cells of the middle layer are polyhedral while the cells of surface layers are large, globular or umbrella shaped.
