Contact process involves three main steps:First burning of sulphur or sulphide ores in air to generate SO_{2} and then conversion of SO_{2} to SO_{3} by the reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst V_{2}O_{5} and finally the absorption of SO_{3} in H_{2}SO_{4} to give oleum and the catalytic oxidation of SO_{2} with O_{2} to give SO_{3} in the presence of catalys V_{2}O_{5} is the key step in the manufacture of sulphuric acid.
