This purification technique is used to recover organic compounds from their aqueous solution. By adding an organic solution into an aqueous solution, different layers will form. The organic compound will be more soluble in the organic solvent and we can extract the organic compound with the organic solvent by means of a separating funnel.

Therefore, option (1) is correct.
