In Young's double slit experiment the separation
d between the slits is 2 mm, the wavelength \lambda of the light used is 5896 A^0 and distance D between the screen and slits is 100 cm. It is found that the angular width of the fringes is 0.20°. To increase the fringe angular width to 0.21° (with same   \lambda and D) the separation between the slits needs to be changed to

As we have learned

Young Double Slit Experiment -

- wherein

y=Delta xcdot left ( frac{D}{d}
ight )

y= Distance of a point on screen from central maxima

Delta x= Path difference at that point

 For nth maxima

d \sin \Theta : n\lambda

\sin \Theta : n\lambda /d

\Theta \approx n\lambda /d\rightarrow (1)

\Theta + \Delta \Theta = n\lambda /d_{1}\Rightarrow \frac{\Theta +\Delta \Theta }{\Theta } = \frac{d'}{d}= \frac{0.21}{0.20}

d' = \frac{0.21}{0.20}*2mm= 2.1mm

Option 1)

2.1 mm

Option 2)

1.9 mm

Option 3)

1.8 mm

Option 4)

1.7 mm
