Steps of Taxonomy -

The steps or processes of taxonomy includes characterization, identification, classification and nomenclature. 

  • Characterization includes noting down of all the observable characteristics of an organism.
  • Identification includes a comparison of all the characters with known species and based on these identifying the species. 
  • Classification is the arrangement of organisms into categories or groups on the basis of their similarities and differences in certain fundamental characters. Then a hierarchy of categories is raised. The various categories are kingdom, phylum or division, class, order, family, genus and species.
  • Nomenclature is the science of giving a suitable name to an organism. Nomenclature is done on the basis of rules and conventions of nomenclature. Organisms are generally given two types of names i.e. vernacular or common names and scientific names.
