In case of Lassaigne's test of halogens, it is necessary to remove sodium cyanide and sodium sulphide from the sodium extract if nitrogen and sulphur are present. This is done by boiling the sodium extract with conc. HNO_{3}.

\begin{aligned} &\mathrm{NaCN}+\mathrm{HNO}_{3} \rightarrow \mathrm{NaNO}_{3}+\mathrm{HCN} \uparrow\\ &\mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{S}+2 \mathrm{HNO}_{3} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{NaNO}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{S} \uparrow \end{aligned}
