In aerobic prokaryotes, each molecule of glucose oxidised generates 38 ATP molecules (2 from glycolysis, 2 from Kreb's cycle, and 34 from the electron transport system). In most eukaryotes, the net gain is 36 ATP molecules (since 2 ATP molecules are used up in transferring NADH into mitochondria).
