What is the Barr body?
A Barr body is an inactive X chromosome found in the nucleus of female mammalian cells. It is only found in females (XX), since males (XY) have only one X chromosome. They form to balance gene expression between males and females and occur during early embryonic development, confirming that only one X chromosome remains active.
The number of Barr bodies in a cell is = Total X chromosomes – 1.
