As we have learnt,

Reaction of alkyl halide with \mathrm{KNO_{2}} :

Alkyl halides when treated with KNO2,  Alkyl nitrite is obtained as product.

Since the K-O bond is ionic, so the negative charge on oxygen serves as attacking site.

\mathrm{CH_3CH_2Br+(K^+)(^-O-N=O) \overset{\Delta }{\longrightarrow} CH_3CH_2-O-N=O + KBr}
