We can rewrite   (998)^3  as

\Rightarrow (998)^3=(1000-2)^3

We will use identity

(a-b)^3=a^3-b^3-3a^2b+3ab^2

Here,  a=1000 \ and \ \ b= 2

Therefore, 

(1000-2)^1=(1000)^3-(2)^3-3.(0100)^2.2+3.1000.2^2

                        = 1000000000-8-6000000+12000= 994011992
