(i) Methylamine and dimethylamine
This test is used to distinguish between aliphatic and aromatic primary amines on heating with chloroform and potassium hydroxide () gives isocyanides or carbylamines which has foul smelling. two degree and 3-degree amines do not show this reaction.
Here methylamine is primary and dimethylamine is a secondary amine.
