(i) When you multiply a number by 6 and subtract 5 from the product, you get 7. Can you tell what the number is?

(i) Let the number be n.

Then according to question, we have :

                        6n\ -\ 5\ =\ 7

or                                  6n\ =\ 7\ +\ 5\ =\ 12

or                                    n\ =\ 2

 

(ii) Let the number be x.

Then according to question, 

  \frac{x}{3}\ +\ 5\ =\ 8

  \frac{x}{3}\ =\ 8\ -\ 5\ =\ 3

 x\ =\ 9
