Here we will use the identity :

                                                       (a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2

Thus :    

                          8.9^2 = (9 - 0.1) ^2 = 9^2 - 2(9)(0.1) + 0.1^2

or                                                           = 81 - 1.8 + 0.01

or                                                           = 79.21
