The disadvantages of fossil fuels are the following:
(i) Their combustion produces smoke, causing air pollution.
(ii) They produce carbon dioxide on burning, which causes the greenhouse effect and is therefore responsible for global warming.
(iii) They produce oxides of sulphur and nitrogen on burning, which cause acid rain.
(iv) Fossil fuels are not a renewable source of energy.
