A series of carbon compounds having different numbers of carbon atoms but have the same functional group substituting the hydrogen atom is known as a homologous series.

For example, methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. constitute the alkane homologous series. The general formula for alkanes is C_nH_{2n+2}.
Methane CH_4; Ethane C_2H_6; Propane C_3H_8 and so on.
