(a) Define wavefront. Use Huygens’ principle to verify the laws of refraction.
(b) How is linearly polarised light obtained by the process of scattering of light ? Find the Brewster angle for air – glass interface, when the refractive index of glass = 1·5.

After time $\tau$ BC is the distance travelled in medium 1 and AE is medium 2.

$V_{1}\rightarrow$ Velocity in medium 1

$V_{2}\rightarrow$ Velocity in medium 2

from $\Delta$ ABC

$\sin i = \frac{V_{1}\tau }{AC}$

$\Delta AEC$

$\sin r = \frac{V_{2}\tau }{AC}$

$\frac{\sin i}{\sin r}=\frac{V_{1}}{V_{2}} \; \; \; \; \; -------(1)$

$n_{1}=\frac{C}{V_{1}}$

$n_{2}=\frac{C}{V_{2}}$

$\frac{V_{1}}{V_{2}}=\frac{n_{2}}{n_{1}}\; \; \; \; \; \; \; \; --------(2)$

$n_{1}\sin i = n_{2}\sin r (from (1) and (2))$

Which represents snells law

Brewsters angle and refractive index is related as

$\mu=\tan \; i_{B}$

$\Rightarrow \tan \; i_{B}=1.5$

$i_{B}=\tan ^{-1}(1.5)=56.3^{o}$
