A plastic box 1.5 m long , 1.25m wide and 65cm deep is to be made . it is to be open at the top . ignoring the thickness of the plastic sheet , determine : 1. The area of the sheet required for making the box . 2. The cost of the sheet for it , if a sheet measuring 1 m^2 costs Rs20.

Solution :   1 . We have ,

$l=$ Length of plastic box $= 1.5 m$

$b=$ Breadth of plastic box $=1.25 m$

$h=$ Height of plastic box $=65cm=0.65m$

Total surface area of the plastic  box $=lb+2(bh+lh)$

$=\left \{ 1.5 \times 1.245+2(1.25\times0.65+0.65\times1.5) \right \}m^2$

$=(1.875+3.575)m^2=5.45m^2$

Hence , area of the sheet required for making the box is $5.45m^2$

2. Since $1m^2$ sheet cost Rs 20 . therefore,

cost of the required for making the box $=$ Area of the sheet $\times$ rate per sq. meter

$= Rs(5.45\times20)=Rs109$
