Define pollination and explain type of pollination with diagram.
Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower, either of the same flower or of another flower.
Types of Pollination
Pollination is of two main types:
1. Self-pollination
Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant.
Types of self-pollination:
Autogamy: Pollen is transferred to the stigma of the same flower.
Geitonogamy: Pollen is transferred to the stigma of a different flower of the same plant.
Advantages:
Maintains purity of the race.
Does not require pollinating agents.
2. Cross-pollination
Transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one flower to the stigma of a flower on another plant of the same species.
Agents of cross-pollination:
Wind
Water
Insects
Birds and animals
Advantages:
Produces genetic variation.
Results in healthier and better-adapted offspring.
