Describe the main features of the cells of Meristem

Answers (1)

The plant tissue consisting of the cells that possess the ability to carry out cell division is called meristematic tissue.

These are present only at certain locations on the plant and hence the growth in the cell takes place only at certain positions.

Initially, after division, the new cells are the same as there parent cell ad later they are differentiated to become a part of other tissues

Depending upon the location of the meristematic tissues, they are of three types:

Apical meristem: Present at the growing tips of stems and roots that are responsible for the growth of the stem and the root

Lateral meristem: Present laterally in the stems and roots. It helps to increase the girth of the stems or roots. It is also known as the cambium.

Intercalary meristem: Present at the base of the leaf and in the region of internodes (the region between two nodes).

Characteristics of cells of meristematic tissue:

Actively dividing

Dense cytoplasm

Thin cellulose wall

No vacuole
