Draw a schematic sketch of a cyclotron. State its working principle and write its two uses.

Cyclotron is a device used to accelerate charged particle usually positive particle to high energies. The cyclotron uses crossed magnetic and electric fields.

Working principle: When a charged particle moves with certain velocity in a perpendicular magnetic field, then a Lorentz magnetic force acted on it. The path followed by the charged particle is circular in shape.

The combination of electric and magnetic field helps to increase the energy of the charged particle. Due to the electric field, the polarity of D1 and D2 is changed which helps to accelerate the particle. The radius of the path is increased due to increase in energy and the shape of the path become a spiral path.

USES:-

  • Cyclotron can be used for producing a radioactive substance which can be used in the hospital for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Cyclotron is used to study nuclear reaction by hitting nuclear with accelerated energy particle.
