Input characteristics is the relation between the base current and base-emitter voltage at a constant collector-emitter voltage
Output characteristics is the relation between collector current and collector-emitter voltage at a constant base current

a) Input resistance is the ratio of change in the base to emitter voltage to the change in base current at a constant collector-emitter voltage
        r_{i}=\left ( \frac{\bigtriangleup V_{be}}{\bigtriangleup I_{B}} \right )_{V_{cE}}
b) Current gain or current amplification factor \left ( \beta \right ) is the ratio of change in collector current to the change in base current at a constant collector-emitter voltage \left ( V_{cE} \right )
Thus \beta =\left ( \frac{\bigtriangleup I_{c}}{\bigtriangleup I_{B}} \right )_{VcE}
