Explain the message of the poem a small pain in my chest?

The meaning of small pain in my chest was that the soldier was feeling pain due to the wound of his chest. He was hurt in the chest and was bleeding. As compared to other peoples who were dead and have their bodies mutilated. His wound, pain was small but it was painful enough to kill him.

The message was clear that the war hurts, people get hurt nobody wants to hurt other people and still he fought for his country and eventually died.
