A biomass pyramid is the representation of total living biomass or organic matter present at different trophic levels in an ecosystem. Biomass is calculated as the mass of living organisms present at each trophic level in a given sample size.
A pyramid of biomass can be of two types:
- Upright Pyramid of Biomass - This type of pyramid is mostly found in the terrestrial regions. In the Upright Pyramid of Biomass, the biomass decreases at the higher tropic levels.
- Inverted Pyramid of Biomass -The inverted pyramid of biomass is found in aquatic ecosystems. In this type of biomass representation, the biomass of producers is lower than that of consumers.
