Find the relation between p and q if x = 3 and y = 1 is the solution of the pair of equations x - 4y + p = 0 and 2x + y - q - 2 = 0.

x-4y+p=0 \;\;\;\;\;\;\;\; - (1)

Putting x=3 and y=1 in eqn (1)

3-4\times 1+p=0

-1+p=0

p=1

Now 2x + y -q -2 =0 \;\;\;\;\;\; -(2)

Putting values of x and y in eq. (2)

2\times 3+1-q-2=0

6 - 1 -q =0

q =5

So the relation between p and q is that q =p+4
