Give 3 characteristics and 3 functions of mitochondria.

Answers (1)

Mitochondria are the rod shaped organelles that are double membrane bound.

Singular: Mitochondrium; Plural: Mitochondria

The outer membrane of mitochondria is very porous whereas the inner membrane is folded and shows is the main region for the formation of ATP molecules.

The foldings of the inner membrane is responsible for the large area available for ATP formation.

Mitochondria are the organelles that help us to obtain energy from the food that we eat.

It causes several reactions causing the breakdown of the food material with the release of energy. Hence mitochondria is known as the powerhouse of the cell.

The energy that is obtained from the breakdown of the molecules of food are stored in the bonds of the other simpler molecules that is ATP. Hence ATP molecules are known as the energy currency.

It is easier to obtain energy from ATP molecules when it is needed by the organism for the activities such as running, talking, thinking, functioning of different organ systems, etc.

Mitochondria have their own DNA molecule along with ribosome and this helps them to make multiple copies of themselves inside a single cell and hence mitochondria are known as semi autonomous. This helps them to combat the larger demand for ATP production.
