James Mill was a Scottish economist and political philosopher who wrote A History of British India in 1817.
He divided Indian history into three periods:
Hindu
Muslim
British
Mill believed that:
Before the coming of the British, Indian society was uncivilized, ignorant, superstitious, and ruled by religious dominance.
He thought that only the British rule could civilize Indians, introduce enlightenment, and bring progress such as laws, order, liberty, and rationality.
