Let the number be x
4 is added to 5 times a number = 5x+4
the result is 12 more than 3 times the number = 3x+12
So,our equation becomes- 5x+4=3x+12
                                       5x-3x=12-4
                                       2x=8
                                       x=8/2
                                       x=4
 so value of x=4
Therefore the number is 4.
