Rain is falling vertically with a speed of 30 m s-1. A woman rides a bicycle with a speed of 10 m s-1 in the north to south direction. What is the direction in which she should hold her umbrella?

The given situation is shown in the figure:-

Since both rain and woman are having some velocity so we need to find the relative velocity of rain with respect to woman.

                             V = V_rain + (-V_woman)

                                     = 30 + (-10)

                                     = 20 m/s

And the angle is given by   : 

                            	anTheta  = fracV_womanV_rain

                            	anTheta  = frac1030

                                    Theta  approx  18^circ

Hence woman needs to hold an umbrella at 18 degrees from vertical towards the south.
