Notes on Swachh Bharat

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan is also known as Clean India Mission. The idea of Swachh Bharat was given by Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi proposed the idea that 'Cleanliness is godliness'. Cleanliness was considered a highest virtue. It was said that God resides where cleanliness is.

Mahatma Gandhi tried to raise awareness on two aspects of cleanliness - physical cleanliness and mental cleanliness. Physical cleanliness was cleanliness of one's surroundings and one's body. We can keep our body clean by bathing daily, brushing two times, cutting our nails and eating well balanced and nutritional food. Mental hygiene by not lying, abusing or taking drugs. 

It was in 2014 that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan started. It was inaugurated by our honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi. Its objective was to raise awareness about open defecation and solid waste management. Open defecation means using and going to washrooms openly. Regarding solid waste management, we have safaai karam hamari or sanitary workers who come in their truck to collect garbage. They are referred to as safaai mitra to give due recognition to their work. They urge people with songs to throw dustbin inside the trucks.

It also raises awareness regarding biodegradable and non biodegradable waste and its disposal. Green dustbins are used for biodegradable wastes such as paper, cardboard and peels of fruits and  vegetables. Blue dustbin is used for non biodegradable waste such as plastic bottles and items. We should properly dispose the two types of waste for the protection of  our environment and our surroundings. We should keep in mind that a healthy body can reside in a healthy environment. A healthy surrounding is thus key to a healthy body and mind.
