Good morning esteemed principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today, I will be speaking on the topic “Sports and sportsmanship”. Sports is an activity that requires physical or mental labour through which you compete with a person or a group of people for entertainment purposes or professionally. Sportsmanship refers to the virtues and ethics that are associated with fair treatment, courage, self control and respect to the game and its players. A game is successful if it is played with a sense of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship gives the game respect and cancels unhealthy competition among its players which is important as all games have wins and losses, but pride and jealousy among players is not ethical or virtuous. Sport is meant to be enjoyed which is the true purpose and essence of a game. If you play a game half heartedly, it is not just to you, your opponent or to the game. But sportsmanship is not extended only to players but to the referee, judges and the game officials from whom we expect fair, just and unbiased treatment towards the players and the game. In a game, as an audience, we need to acknowledge the hard effort of all the players. They gave their best and we should cheer them on for that. Thank you.
