The characters in the story 'Journey by Night' written by Norah Burke are Sher Singh, Sher Singh Bahadur, Kunwar, Sher Singh's mother and Doctor. The family of Sher Singh lives in poverty. They have seen many children dying due to cholera.

The story starts with kunwar who is a young boy and has developed stomach ache making him difficult to move and play. He had symptoms of cholera. Through out the story being young,  he is dependent on his parents. He feels sick and needed to be admitted to a hospital.

Kunwar 's mother is a hardworking  and kind lady who tries her best to take care of home and children. Despite all her efforts many of her children have died of cholera. Her mother and their family is living in poor conditions and finding it difficult to meet their ends meet. Her mother has seen  really bad time with her children dying and she tries her hard to save the children.

Sher Singh Bahadur is the father of the children Sher Singh and Kunwar. He is a very brave men who lives in a jungle. Many times he has fought a tiger or a lion. He is very brave and courageous. He is also very famous for his courageous activities and spent most of his time in jungle.

Sher Singh is the elder brother of Kunwar. He suffered various hardships, natural calamities and dangerous animals on his way to jungle but still he was able to carry his brother to the hospital.  He is very courageous like his father and he knows how to swim. He faced different difficulties and used his experience, smartness and courage to face all of them. He thus, was responsible and can be entrusted with a task which he will lead to completion.

Doctor was in the hospital who quickly administered Kunwar Singh and did his treatment. He was a skilled doctor, he appreciated Sher Singh for his hardwork, determination and named him Sher Singh Bahadur. 

Journey by night by Norah Burke is a tale of Human determination and Human courage was the protagonist. This story is about the Family of poor people who live in a Jungle. Sher Singh’s Father was a brave Hunter and was away from the Photographic expedition he was the perfect example of courageous people in the world. The younger boy had a severe stomach ache and from that day the boy was feared and he thought that this boy would die at any moment then he must take him to the hospital on time. During that time other family members were also not well. They had other diseases such as Cholera, Influenza and some died in Jungle accidents. Through Sher Singh felt an illness inside himself and he bravely took his brother to the hospital to save his younger brother. This story is very touching and inspiring on account of the power of determination and human courage.
