The mean of 100 observations was calculated as 40. It was found later on that one of the observations was misread as 83 instead of 53. The correct mean is ?

  • So, the sum of all 100 observations = 100 × 40 = 4000
  • One value was wrongly taken as 83 instead of 53 (it was 30 too high)

To find- Correct mean

Solution- Wrong total sum = 4000

Correct total sum = 4000 - 83 + 53 = 3970

Correct mean = Total correct sum ÷ Number of observations = 3970 ÷ 100 = 39.7
