Two small identical electric dipoles AB and CD, each of dipole moment $\overrightarrow{p}$ are kept at an angle of $90^{\circ}$ to each other in an external electric field $\overrightarrow{E}$ pointing along the x-axis as shown in the figure. Find the

(a) dipole moment of the arrangement, and

(b) magnitude and direction of the net torque acting on it.

a)

$P=\sqrt{P_1^2+P_2^2}=\sqrt{P^2+P^2}=\sqrt{2}P$

$Direction\ \theta=tan^{-1}(\frac{P}{P})=45^0$

b)

$T=\sqrt{2}PEsin45=PE$
