What are photodiodes?

best_answer

A photodiode is a unique type of semiconductor material that responds to light and uses it to flow as an electric current. In reverse bias conditions, it means it will not flow electricity if it is in the dark, but when in light, electricity flows.

The photons (the particles of light) strike the photodiode and produce a small electrical charge (electron-hole pairs) to create a weak current. It produces more current with stronger light.

There are various photodiodes, such as PN junction, PIN, and avalanche photodiodes, each suited to different sensitivities.

They are used in daily devices such as cameras, smoke alarms, remote controls, and medical devices due to their capacity to detect and react to light instantly and accurately.
