In situ conservation involves the preservation of animals within their natural setting so that they may live their lives freely within such areas as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves.

Ex-situ conservation refers to the preservation of threatened species through the transfer of such animals from their original environment to artificially created conditions so that they are provided with necessary care, propagated, and even researched.

Examples of in situ conservation include Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand), Kaziranga National Park (Assam), and Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve (West Bengal).

Examples of ex-situ conservation examples are Nandankanan Zoological Park (Odisha), Mysore Zoo (Karnataka), Madras Crocodile Bank (Tamil Nadu), etc.
