The subordinate clause is also known as Dependent Clause.
The dependent clause depends on the main clause.
It can not stand alone and hence it doesn't make complete sense.

It can not express meaningful thought.

e.g:
I was shopping until it went dark.

Until it went dark is a subordinate clause.
