What is Biopiracy?
The act of unethical or unauthorized use of biological resources and traditional knowledge without providing fair compensation to Indigenous communities or the countries of origin is known as Biopiracy.
It includes the exploitation of plants, animals, and microorganisms for commercial purposes. This is primarily carried out to obtain growth in the pharmaceutical, agriculture, and cosmetic sectors.
One of the most popular examples of biopiracy is the Basmati rice controversy. It was in 1997 that a U.S. corporation obtained a patent for a rice variety called Basmati-type, claiming it to be a new invention.
