Cleistogamy is the self-pollination that occurs in cleistogamous flowers that do not open at all and in such flowers, anther and stigma lie close to each other.
ADVANTAGE
- Cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous as there is no chance of cross-pollen landing on the stigma thus pure lines are produced.
- Cleistogamous flowers produce assured seed-set even in the absence of pollinators thus it doesn’t require any external agent for pollination.
DISADVANTAGE
- Chances of variation and evolution of genetically superior plants is reduced thus new varieties and species are not produced.
