What is meristematic tissue? State its type.

Answers (1)

The plant tissue consisting of the cells that possess the ability to carry out cell division is called meristematic tissue.

Depending upon the location of the meristematic tissues, they are of three types:

  • Apical meristem: Present at the growing tips of stems and roots that are responsible for the growth of the stem and the root
  • Lateral meristem: Present laterally in the stems and roots. It helps to increase the girth of the stems or roots. It is also known as the cambium.
  • Intercalary meristem: Present at the base of the leaf and in the region of internodes (the region between two nodes).
