Functions of mitochondria:

It causes several reactions causing the breakdown of the food material with the release of energy. Hence mitochondria is known as the powerhouse of the cell.

The energy that is obtained from the breakdown of the molecules of food is stored in the bonds of the other simpler molecules that is ATP. Hence ATP molecules are known as the energy currency.

It is easier to obtain energy from ATP molecules when it is needed by the organism for activities such as running, talking, thinking, functioning of different organ systems, etc.
