The Drought is written by Surat Chandra Chatterji. It is a story of a cruel landlord named Shibu Babu who lived in the village of Kashipur. Gafur was a poor farmer he had daughter named Amina. Gafur had a bull. He called him Mahesh. There was a scarcity of food and water. There was drought all around. People lacked food and water. Shibu Babu had a private tank and he did not let any one to take water from his tank. Tarakratna, a priest was coming from Shibu Babu's house. The bull was tied in the sun. Gafur also suffers with fever. The priest told him that the landlord would punish him if the bull died. Gafur wanted to sell his bull (Mahesh) but nobody wants to buy.                                         It was about middle of June. Gafur asked for food. Amina told him that there was no rice. Then he asked for water. She refused. In anger he slapped Amina.She went out to fetch water. Mahesh entered the garden of the landlord.He had hurt his daughter too and broke the pitcher of Amina and sucked water from it.Gafur became so furious that he hit the bull so hard that he died. With the fear of the landlord's anger, Gafur left the village at night with his daughter.
