The immediate cause of the revolt of 1857 was the Indian military were forced to use  Enfield rifles greased with cow and pig fat. Loading the Enfield often required tearing open the greased cartridge with one's teeth. So the 34th regiment's leader Mangal Pandey killed Lieutenant Baugh and General Hussain, and started 1857 revolt.
