Lysosomes digest the foreign substances that end up in lysosomes such as bacteria, food material and sometimes the worn-out cell organelles.
The digestive enzyme of the lysosomes catalyzes the digestion reactions
Sometimes the metabolic activities of the cell is disturbed and hence it causes the damaging of the cell. This damaged cell is also digested by the lysosomes. Thus, lysosomes are also known as ‘ scavengers of the cell’.
