Shiv ratri is a Hindu festival. We celebrate it to worship Lord Shiva. The term ratri means night in English. It means when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance. As per the Hindu calendar, shivratri is celebrated on either on thirteenth or fourteenth day /night of late winter that is in the month of February /March. This month is also known as Phalguna as per north Indian calendar. In South India Hindu Calendar,  it is also known as Maagha Maas Krishna Paksha. It is celebrated before the arrival of summer and is known as Shivratri- the  great night of Lord Shiva. In this night Lord Shiva and Parvati got married. This festival is celebrated by observing fast and not eating anything but water till night. By doing lingam puja, the phallic symbol of Shiva is celebrated by bathing it with water, milk, flowers and bel leaves. People also stay awake and do jagran this day. Jagran means they sing religious songs throughout day and night. This year Shivaratri was celebrated on eleventh of March. It is celebrated annually means once in a year every year. Thus, it is an important festival.
