Due to excessive hunting by sailors and predation by introduced species, The Dodo became extinct in the late 1600s. In 1914, because of mass hunting and habitat loss, the once numbering in billions passenger pigeon became extinct.

The Caribbean monk seal which was hunted for its oil became extinct in the 1950s. Another tragic loss was the Tasmanian Tiger which was hunted aggressively due to its perceived threat to livestock in 1936.
