A dc source of emf E_{1}=100 V and internal resistance r=0.5\Omega, a storage battery of emf E_{2}=90V and an external resistance R are connected as shown in figure. For what value of R no current will pass through the battery ?

Given E  = 100V, r = 0.5ohms, e = 90V.

For no current to flow through the battery,

E/V = (R+r)/R

100/90 = (R+0.5)/R

Hence R = 4.5 ohms
