According to the first law of thermodynamics,

                  \mathrm{\Delta U=Q+W.}
where \mathrm{\Delta U} is the change in internal energy,

Q is the heat transfer, and W is the work done on the system. But here work is done by the system so, W=-300 \mathrm{~J}
Substituting the values:

\mathrm{ \begin{aligned} & Q=400 \mathrm{~J}, \\ & W=300 \mathrm{~J} . \end{aligned} }

Therefore,

\mathrm{ \Delta U=Q+W=400 \mathrm{~J}-300 \mathrm{~J}=100 \mathrm{~J} }
