Given that,

There are  6 different appetizers, 8 different main courses, and 4 different desserts on the menu.

Zero or more appetizers can be selected in 6 + 1 = 7 ways.

Zero or more main courses can be selected in 8 + 1 = 9 ways.

Zero or more desserts can be selected in 4 + 1 = 5 ways.

So, the total number of ways is, 

7 \times 9 \times 5=315

But we included a case of 0 appetizers, 0 main courses, and 0 deserts, so we have to subtract to get 315 - 1 = 314 ways.

Therefore, the total number of ways to select the items from the menu is 314.
