Option: 1 both \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4} and \mathrm{HNO}_{3} act as bases
Option: 2 \mathrm{HNO_3} acts as an acid and \mathrm{H_2SO_4} acts as a base
Option: 3 both \mathrm{H_2SO_4} and \mathrm{HNO_3} act as acids
Option: 4 \mathrm{HNO_3} acts as a base and \mathrm{H_2SO_4} acts as an acid

During nitration, a mixture of conc. \mathrm{HNO}_{3} and \mathrm{conc} \cdot \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4} is taken as the nitrating mixture which generates the electrophile \mathrm{NO}_{2}{ }^{+}.

Here, \mathrm{HNO}_{3} acts as a base and is protonated to generate the leaving group \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}.

\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO_4} acts as an acid.

Hence, the correct answer is option (4)
